Several studies conducted around the world and published in various journals have established the fact that stem cells are effective in recuperating various ailments, especially ailments related to heart.

Under these studies, stem cells were implanted into the patients with various physical conditions like acute myocardial infarction, ischemic cardiac insufficiency, refractory angina, etc.

The results of the studies are very encouraging. One of the studies was conducted to evaluate if autologous bone marrow progenitor cell implant after acute myocardial infarction increases systolic ventricular function. Most of the patients recovered earlier than expected and the recoveries were successful. This has proved that autologous implant of bone marrow progenitor cells increased the ejection fraction of the left ventricle after the first acute myocardial infarction.

It is also observed with some patients that trans-coronary implant of bone marrow progenitor cells is safe and effective. However, it cannot be ascertained as how many doses are capable of improving the ventricular function in a sustained way.

It could be concluded that stem cell transplant in association with aortocoronary bypass is practicable and safe in patients with previous myocardial infarction and low ejection fraction. Most of the studies have found an improvement in the left ventricular function that could reduce mortality rate and improve quality of life for certain.
