Biopsy
A biopsy is a medical test that involves removal of cells or tissues from the body to examine for the presence of any particular disease. The procedure has gained wide acceptance as it results in an accurate diagnosis of the disease. This is generally performed to diagnose a tumor or lump formed in the body.
The biopsy is performed at the nearest point to the tumor. A needle is guided precisely to the spot, using fluoroscopy, ultrasound or CT scan. Virtually any tumor image can be seen by some of these reviews, and very small tumors also can be reached to obtain a sample.
The fine-needle biopsy (20 to 25g) is performed to obtain tissues that will be studied by modern techniques of cito-pathology. This helps in deciding whether the cells in the tumor are benign or malignant.
The coarse needle biopsy (16 to 19g) is used to obtain a larger chunk of tissues for sample allowing a better examination and precise diagnosis. This facilitates the decision about choosing the most suitable course of treatment for the patient.
The percutaneous biopsy is very accurate. It requires no cutting and hence does not require hospitalization. Patients can return to their normal activities on the following day. It is very safe process that does not involve any complications.
The image-guided percutaneous biopsies offer various advantages:
- It is very precise and gives clear images of the tumor
- It does not damage vascular and nerve structures
- Does not involves any complications
- It is painless
- Can be performed under a conscious sedation
- Does not require general anesthesia or prolonged hospitalization.
